Welcome to my site. I specialize in Information Architecture,
Web Scripting, Web Design, and Multimedia Production. Take a look at my
online resume, or peruse some of my recent projects; then
tell me how I can put my skills to work for you.
UPDATE: I'm know the "Director of Web Development and Marketing" of
Karen Pryor Clickertraining and TAGteach International,
two companies focusing on operant conditioning techniques for animal training and
sports training. I also
clicker trained my cat.
Multimedia Production:
I have a strong background in electronic music and digital video, including work
on video-based gallery installations using Adobe Premiere, Quicktime, Media100 and
Adobe After Effects, and a streaming radio program using MP3 and Shoutcast. I've
also produced several works in Macromedia Director and Flash, I'm familiar with
Lingo scripting, and I'm currently learning ActionScript, a derivative of JavaScript.
Information Architecture:
As Web/Information Designer at O'Reilly & Associates,
I helped create Safari Books Online, a web
service that puts the entire print catalogs of several leading tech book publishers
into an online library with multiple interfaces, subscription options, and levels
of clientele, from individual users to corporate intranets to online resellers.
At last count, Safari contains over 500 technical and computer books, all readable,
searchable and annotable online.
At Brown University, I majored in "Digital Arts and Media," an independent
concentration combining computer science, hypertext, and interactive multimedia.
I focused on hypertext writing, creating large webs of research, academic papers,
and fiction through various hypertext systems including HTML, Storyspace, and Macromedia
Flash. Some of my work can be found in the curriculum of universities around the
world as exemplars of early web-based hypertext innovation and thought, and I've
studied with pioneers of hypertext literature and research like George Landow and
Robert Coover.
Web Scripting:
I co-authored "Designing with
JavaScript, 2nd Ed.", which has gotten rave reviews and is currently
on sale at
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other national bookstores. "Designing
with JavaScript" takes the non-technical web designer through the fundamentals
of the language, DHTML, and object-oriented programming, while focusing on practical
examples that are applicable on first reading. I also contributed two chapters to
"Web Design in a Nutshell, 2nd Ed.", a bestseller, on web interctivity
and Dynamic HTML.
I've contributed articles on JavaScript to the O'Reilly Network, including "Hierarchical
Menus with the Underrated style.display Object", and "Cross-browser
Style Objects." While at O'Reilly, I learned Perl from Jon Orwant,
co-author of "Programming Perl, 3rd Ed." and Editor-in-Chief of "the
Perl Journal," and was a technical reviewer of "Perl for Website Management,"
also from O'Reilly.
Web Design:
I've worked as a Web Designer since 1997, in an advertising agency, a publishing
company, and in numerous freelance and independent projects. My most recent work
includes Safari Books Online, a web service
and publishing platofrm whose interface is customizable for each reseller, which
entailed creating detailed interface standards, XHTML and CSS templates, and a variety
of unique looks for client sites and demonstrations. For a sample of my designs,
